Harry Arthur Jones

Harry Arthur Jones passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2018. He was born December 21, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio to Arthur and Agnes Baxter Jones. His grandparents were Peter and Edith Jones of Rhyl, North Wales and Robert and Annie Flack Baxter of Belfast, Ireland. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Flora; stepsons, Paul Perkins and David Perkins (Val -Deborah); brothers, Thomas Jones and Eric Jones both of Melbourne, Florida; nephew, Sean Jones; niece, Sharon White and their families. He was preceded in death by his sister, Glenys Jones Robinson. Harry was a World War II veteran who served in Korea. After his time in the Army was over, he moved to Florida and after a time on the west coast, decided to go to California to train to be a Licensed Aircraft Mechanic. He enjoyed the work but found more jobs available in the space industry. He began working for RCA at Patric Air Force Base just as the astronaut program began and soon became an Experimental Machinist where he worked on designing and fabricating parts for the Eastern Test Range tracking antennas. After Harry retired, he was able to move to his beloved North Georgia Mountains where he enjoyed camping vacations for many years. There he became interested in making musical instruments. His machinist training helped him form beautiful wooden lap and hammered dulcimers, harps, banjos and more. He enjoyed all music but especially loved mountain melodies. His Scottish and Irish ancestry led him to learn to folk dance which he and Flora enjoyed for many years. Services will be held at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church in Floyd County at a later date. Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee, Georgia is in charge of arrangements.
