Thomas Richard Oakley, Jr.

Mr. Thomas Richard Oakley, Jr. age 76 of Hiawassee, GA, passed away on June 21, 2014 in Chatuge Regional Nursing Home in Hiawassee. Mr. Oakley was born to the late Thomas R. Oakley, Sr. and Susie (Berrong) Oakley on January 25, 1938 in Washington, DC.
As a young boy, he was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Falls Church, VA High School in 1956. He obtained a Journalism Degree from Washington and Lee University in 1960. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Thomas held many positions in his lifetime. Among those titles were a wrestling coach, football coach, owner and operator of The Oakley Raiders Peewee Football team, where he coached both of his sons.
He was the owner of Oakley’s Concrete, Inc. in VA. Thomas was also a land developer. In 1976 he moved to Towns County. He was a member of McConnell Memorial Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Sue Nelson, sons, Thomas R. Oakley III (Ricky) & Frederick Todd Oakley. He is survived by daughter, Susan Oakley, of Sterling, VA & her partner Tom Lloyd, daughter and son-in-law, Jenni & Nathan Dixon, of Blairsville, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Laura Oakley (Sunshine) & David Ray, grandchildren, Christina Rose Sackett, Cadee Alley and husband Randy, Maggie Sackett, Kiersten Oakley-Cox, Bailey Chastain, Jackie, Terri and Allie Lloyd, Katie Dixon, Madelyn Sutton and JonDavid Ray. Great grandchild, Callie Alley. One niece, Kara Sue Nelson, one nephew, Chip Nelson; great niece and nephew, Eden and Elijah Nelson. He is also survived by special friends, Marta Martin, of VA and Cathy Oakley, of Warne, NC. Memorial service will be on July 25, 2014 at 5:30 PM from McConnell Memorial Baptist Church.
