Rita “Lynn” Wimpy Barrett, age 77, of Young Harris, Georgia, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026.

Born on December 5, 1948, in Towns County, Georgia, Lynn was the daughter of the late Esco Lafayette Wimpy and Ola Mae Sampson Wimpy. She lived a life defined by love for her family, dedication to her community, and a lifelong passion for helping children learn and grow.

As a young girl, Lynn loved riding horses and spending time outdoors in the mountains of North Georgia. She also developed a love for basketball, playing throughout her high school years. Known for her cheerful spirit and sportsmanship, she was voted “Best Sport” by her classmates in her senior superlatives. Lynn graduated with the Towns County High School Class of 1966 and remained proud of her classmates and the friendships she shared with them.

Lynn devoted more than 30 years of her life to a career in early childhood education. Her patience, kindness, and gentle guidance helped shape the lives of countless children and families in the community. She had a natural gift for nurturing young minds and found great joy in watching children learn and flourish.

She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Lynn was the proud mother of Faron Winslow King and the late Daren Esco King. She was a cherished grandmother to Liam Esco King and Maeleigh Katelyn King. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Rebecca Dayton King, wife of Faron Winslow King. Lynn was one of three daughters and is also survived by her sister, Deborah Wimpy Barrett. She is also survived by her stepson, Matthew Barrett, and step-grandson, Christian Barrett, along with many extended family members, former students, and dear friends whose lives were touched by her kindness and warm spirit.

In addition to her parents, Lynn was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lamar Barrett; her husband and the father of her children, Harry Winslow King; her son, Daren Esco King; her daughter-in-law, Sabrina Allen King, wife of Daren Esco King and mother of Liam and Maeleigh; and her sister, Gilda Wimpy Ledford.

Funeral services will be officiated by Reverend Ricky Rogers with interment to follow in the Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dawn Nichols, Kendall Barrett, Liam King, Charles Ledford, FC Wimpy, and Michael Sampson.

Honorary pallbearers will include all members of the Towns County High School Class of 1966 in attendance.

Mrs. Barrett will be remembered for her loving heart, her dedication to children and education, her strong devotion to family, and the many friendships she cherished throughout her life. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
