It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Mickey Wilson (3/19/40 to 9/12/26). She was the daughter of Kimsey and Hortense Tipton. She is preceded in death by her husband JT Wilson, brothers; Joe Tipton, Billy Tipton, Isaac Tipton, Tony Tipton, and sisters; Virginia Collins, Joyce Duckett, Jackie Tipton, and Andreau Tipton. She is survived by her niece Lita Barnette, her husband; Dan Barnette, and their children, Beau and Jeb. She is also survived by many other nieces, nephews, and family who loved her very much.
Mickey was born and raised in Sautee, GA. She graduated from Nacoochee High School and went on to earn a college degree at Berry College. Both in high school and college Mickey was a powerhouse basketball player. Mickey became a teacher in Blue Ridge, GA and then completed her teaching career in Hiawassee, GA. She was an English teacher and a visiting teacher. She retired after 30 years from Towns County Comprehensive School.
In 1962, Mickey and JT were married in Robertstown, GA. There a wonderful life began. Mickey and JT have been faithful companions for over 60 years. In 1963, they returned to JT’s homeplace of Hiawassee, where they have remained. Those 63 years have been filled with love, laughter, travel, and hard work, but at the core- a deep commitment to one another and to family.
Mickey has been a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church for 50 years where she served in many ways, such as the scholarship committee, Wednesday night supper group, pianist and where her heart truly shone: the church choir. Not only active in the church choir, she was also active in the community. She could be seen at flower shows, farmer’s markets, as well as, singing with a choir in local nursing and assisted living homes.
Mickey’s life has been filled with family. Living in Towns County afforded her time to spend with her many brothers and sisters and their families. She loved her time with family. She reveled in our family Thanksgivings, July 4th celebrations and her beach trips with her sisters and others. She also spent time with JT’s family. The most precious time was her time with JT. They traveled to all 50 states, Jimmy Carter’s inauguration, the Panama Canal. They were wonderful together. Mickey will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be from Friday, September 18 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, with the funeral on Saturday, September 19 at 11:00 AM at Macedonia Baptist Church. In honor of Mickey Wilson, flowers may be sent to the church. Memorial donations may be given in honor of Mickey Wilson to the Macedonia Baptist Church Scholarship Fund.
