Merle C Lockaby passed away peacefully at his home in Brasstown, NC on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.
Merle was born on June 23, 1948 in Hiawassee, GA. He was a US Army Sergeant, serving from 1967-
1969 during the Vietnam War in both, Infantry and Aviation. He was recognized for his honorable
service and awarded multi purple hearts, a Bronze Star, and numerous Air Medals. He also proudly
supported his local VFW and other veteran organizations. After his military service, he made a long
career in commercial development. When he retired, he became a full time cattle farmer. Most
afternoons he could be found sitting on his porch, watching the cows and admiring what he called, the
“best view”, with 38 mountain peaks. On weekends, he loved to watch football. As he said, he lived his
life his way!
Merle was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ruth Penland. His parents, Roy and Maggie Lockaby, and
brothers, Duel, Jerle, and Michael Lockaby. He is survived by his daughter, Angela (Darrin) Shook of
Hayesville, NC. Son, Jeff Lockaby of Douglasville, GA. Stepson, Chris (Nikki) Penland of Buford, GA.
Grandchildren, Amber Lockaby, Dylan Lockaby, Madison Shook, and Brett Shook. Step-grandchildren,
Maddie Penland, Will Penland, and Wyatt Penland. Four great-grandchildren. Sister, Deborah (Richie)
Carey of Blairsville, GA. Sister-in-law, Reba Lockaby of Rome, GA and many nieces, nephews, cousins,
and friends.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 2:00pm at Merle's home.
