Mrs. Mary Zoller Lightner, of Young Harris passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 28, 2023 following a two-year battle with cancer.
A native of Ohio, she earned bachelors degrees in criminology and paralegal work, as well as a master’s degree in public policy from Ohio State University. Her professional career included serving as senior policy analyst for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In retirement, she moved to Young Harris and immersed herself in creating fused glass artwork, which portrayed scenic mountain views, flowers and other subjects of nature. Her work earned several awards has been sold across the country.
A avid animal lover, she was a certified dog behavior consultant. In addition to raising four dogs of her own, she fostered several cats and herding dogs. Her other passions included gardening, hiking and paddle boarding. She was a member of Sharp Methodist Church and was active in several community organizations.
She is preceded in death by her parents Lloyd and Harriett Zoller. She is survived by her husband, John; her sister, Holly Shumate; her brother, Charles Zoller; her niece Lindsay Zoller; and her cousin, Olivia Wall.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the local Animal Humane Society.
