Margaret Hay Shattles
November 8, 1942 - August 03, 2025
Margaret Hay Shattles, of Hiawassee, Georgia, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on November 8, 1942, in Macon, Georgia, to William Jesse Hay, Sr. and Doris Hay, Margaret lived a life full of faith, family, love, and creativity.
A devoted member of the Baptist faith, Margaret gave her life to the Lord at a young age.
Throughout her life, she remained a faithful servant and found great joy in worship and fellowship. She was a longtime member of McConnell Baptist Church and, in the last year of her illness, attended Friendship Baptist Church with her son and daughter-in-law, where she found comfort and community.
Margaret was preceded in death by her beloved brother, William Jesse Hay, Jr., and by her cherished husband, Robert Shattles, with whom she shared many adventures over a lifetime of love. Together, they traveled across the United States on a motorcycle, creating memories and stories that she cherished dearly. Of all the places they lived-Atlanta, St. Louis, Memphis, Baltimore, Anchorage, and Miami-Alaska held a special place in her heart. She was never tired of sharing stories about the beauty of God's creation there.
Margaret was the heart of her family. A loving wife and nurturing mother, she raised three sons with strength and grace. She was a master quilter, known for her meticulous work and creative spirit. Her quilts were more than fabric and thread-they were pieces of art and acts of love. She found great joy and companionship in her quilting community, and her work will be treasured for generations to come.
She is survived by her children: Robert "Jay" Shattles, engaged to Nicole Salvati-Jones; William
"Scott" Shattles, married to Cristy Shattles; and Thomas Christopher "Chris" Shattles, married to Allison Shattles. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Hannah Shattles, Macy Williams (married to Andrew Williams), Elizabeth Shattles, Sophia Shattles (engaged to Brogan Moore), Megan Shattles, and step-grandson Dakota "Cody" Williams, married to Jordan.
Margaret's love for her family was deep and unconditional. She will be remembered for her warm smile, her unwavering faith, her kind heart, and her fierce devotion to those she loved. Her legacy will live on in the lives she touched and the love she gave so freely.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
