Hiawassee

Katherine “Kathy” Marie Kirby Denton passed after a long battle with illness on Thursday, June 25, 2026. Kathy was born June 19, 1958 to Gordon Kirby Jr. and the late Lucy Kirby. She grew up in Hiawassee, GA, where she went on to have her three children. Kathy spent a lot of time in the kitchen, cooking in restaurants and family kitchens alike. She was also a waitress for many years where she made all her customers feel like they were being served at the family table. She showed her love through food and created lasting memories with her family and customers. Whether it was a holiday or just a rough day, a meal from her would make your belly full and your heart warm. She later became a CNA as she always loved taking care of others. She worked as a nurse at Brasstown Manor and Chatuge Regional Nursing Home where she was loved by her patients and coworkers.

Kathy was known for her “green thumb” and loved working in her garden. She enjoyed crocheting blankets for all the new arrivals in the family as well as sewing and creating gifts for family and friends. Kathy loved to sit on the porch watching the birds or just listening to the rain. She was a hardworker, a loved daughter, a loving sister, a devoted mother and a wonderful friend to many. Kathy will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.

She is preceded in death by her grandmother, Minnie Johnson; her mother, Lucy Kirby and her sister, Nancy Jasinski. She is survived by her father, Gordon Kirby Jr.; her brother, Tony Kirby; her sisters, Tina Denton, Donna Delong, and Denise Carman; her sons, Ethan(Shana) Kuykendall and Brock(Nancy) Denton; her daughter, Bailey Denton; her grandson, Eli Kuykendall; her granddaughter, Lathan Kuykendall; and several nieces and nephews.
