Harry Brooks Strickland was born in Statesboro, Georgia on April 5, 1927 and died in Hiawassee, Georgia on August 23, 2011. At 17, Harry served in the Navy during WWII and upon his return, he earned his degree from Georgia Teacher's College and later earned his masters degree from Georgia State University. Harry was called to teach high school math, civics, and physical education for students attending Brown, Grady, Parkview and Brookwood where he also coached football, soccer and other sports. Harry considered it an honor and privilege to give his students and players instruction and guidance, he loved them all dearly. He joyfully served as the chaplain and president for the North Georgia Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Most dear to him was being a member of the Hiawassee United Methodist Church and serving as a lay minister. He is survived by his beloved wife Sarah Brandt Strickland, his two cherished sisters and brother-in-law, Virginia Howell, Helen Bilby, and Eddie Brandt, his daughter Kim Dechiara, son-in-law Tony Dechiara, his grand children Sarah and Brooks Dechiara. The visitation will be on Saturday, August 27th at 2:00 p.m. at Hiawassee United Methodist Church with the funeral immediately following at 3:00 p.m. Please make donations to YMCA Camp High Harbour, Attn.
