Betty Bowers, age 90, a native of Hiawassee, GA, passed away on February 11, 2023 at Murphy
Medical Center, Murphy, NC. She was the first born of the late Howard and Maybelle Chastain
Bowers. As a very astute individual and an avid reader, she graduated early from high school at
the young age of 15. She was a graduate of Towns County High School, Hiawassee, and
Southern Business University of Atlanta, GA. She worked many years as an Executive Secretary
in Atlanta as well as being a Legal Secretary for various attorneys. In addition, Betty also served
approximately ten years on the Hiawassee, GA City Council. Her passion was good home
cooking, being a loving mother and homemaker, as well as being an artist. Throughout her
travels and her life, she has painted many very beautiful oil paintings that will be treasured for
years to come.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents Howard and Maybelle Chastain Bowers, husbands
Reuben Nicholson and Robert Hodnett, Sr., a son, John Nicholson, a sister, Anne Bowers
Hogsed, and a brother, Boyd Bowers.
She is survived by sons Joel Nicholson and Robert “Robby” (Sheila) Hodnett II, a daughter,
Nona Hodnett, a step-daughter, Edith Batson Hill, a daughter-in-law Cheryl Nicholson, two
grandchildren, Zachary (Rachel) Nicholson, and Robert Hodnett III, three great grandchildren
Annaston Hodnett, Noah Nicholson, and Olivia Rose Nicholson, several nieces, nephews, and
cousins, and a sister, Billye Jones, two sisters-in-law, Joan Bowers and Jewell Nicholson.
Betty Bowers was a loving mother and a sweet and kind lady to all those that knew her. She was
a local gem and will be missed by so many.
A memorial service for Betty Bowers will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 1:00 pm at
McConnell Memorial Baptist Church in Hiawassee with Reverend Steve Taylor officiating.
